RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
